Abstract
The blood and bone marrow of a 6-year old boy with severe eosinophilia were
stuided in an attempt to characterize further the entity of non-neoplastic
hypereosinophilic syndrome. Cultures in semisolid agar for committed
granulocyte-monocyte progenitor cells (GM-CFU) of hypereosinophilic syndrome revealed
patterns of colony size and number and cell morphology which were indistinguishable
from those seen in normal control, but different from the growth pattern usually seen in
chronic granulocytic leukemia. Normal in vitro granulopoiesis may help to differentiate
hypereosinophilic syndrome from eosinophilic leukemia (a varient of chronic granulocytic
leukemia). But it is unlikely to differentiate from bone marrow involvement of malignant
Iymphoma.
